AbstractAbstract
[en] The present conference discusses topics in fiber-optic (FO) cable and network reliability in adverse environments, the fatigue and damage of laser light-sources, damage to optical fibers, radiation effects on optical materials and components, FO characteristics measurement, FO sensor reliability, and test and measurement methods for FO systems. Attention is given to the cyclic fatigue behavior of silica fiber, post-mortem analyses of FO cables, the aging behavior of low strength fused silica fibers, neutron irradiation results on optical fibers operating at 1.3 and 1.55 microns, mechanical testing and reliability of fusion splices, the reliability of FO position sensors, and high impact shock test results for FO components

AbstractAbstract
[en] The polarization of neutron spin, target nucleus spin and 3He nuclear spin was developed at KEK for measuring the T-odd term in polarized neutron transmission through a polarized nuclear target. A method to measure the neutron spin rotation was developed for the T-violation experiment. This apparatus has been found to be quite useful for the P-violating neutron spin rotation experiment. The angular distribution of neutron-capture γ-rays was measured for the study of the enhancement mechanism of the P-violation. The results are also discussed. (orig.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The role of the motion of bound electrons in target atoms in electron beam polarization measurements by means of Moeller scattering is discussed. It is shown that this effect can result in an essential overestimate of the asymmetry. This overestimate considerably exceeds the uncertainty of the target polarization, and, therefore, the effect should be taken into account in experiments with polarized electrons and in the development of Moeller polarimeters. Some recommendations are given to eliminate this systematic error. ((orig.))

AbstractAbstract
[en] The problem of a mechanical disturbance in a piezoelectric slab bounded by an elastic medium on both sides and the bounding surfaces of which are coated with a thin film of conducting material has been investigated in the present paper. The problem involves the interaction of two fields viz., electrical and mechanical. The variation of the mechanical disturbances with time ranging from 0 to 10s exhibits a linear relationship but significantly with a constant disturbance of the order of 10-8 m at t=0

AbstractAbstract
[en] Using the condition of the German nuclear power plants today as a starting point, measures for the maintenance and renewing of old electric and control technology are discussed. The basic tasks and aims of the ageing management, the recognition of impermissible alterations of system characteristics, the ensuring of the required replacement and subsequent deliveries, and taking experience and new developments into account, some important examples such as the maintenance of the malfunction immunity, utilisation of new digital control technology and alternative systems from atomic plant practice are mentioned. figs

AbstractAbstract
[en] In spectroscopic analysis, radiation detection, and medical application fields, portable instruments requiring high accuracy and high sensitivity are being developed. Since conventional photomultiplier tube (PMT) envelopes are made of glass and are large in size, it is difficult to downsize instruments. PMTs are mainly used for high accuracy instruments, while solid state detectors are employed for general purpose, or compact instruments. Hamamatsu recently developed the compact PMT R5600 series, which is downsized to the same dimensions as a solid state detector while maintaining the same performance, high sensitivity and high speed as the conventional PMTs
