AbstractAbstract
[en] Method of control of adhesive joints of heat-insulating materials by neutron radiography based on radioscopy of the product under testine with neutron beam and registration of its neutron image is described. Investigations have been conducted using samples of fibrous heat-insulating material presented in the form of high- porous substance based on α-quartz in the form of plates fixed to the metal via heat-insulating packings on the base of organic fibres was conducted using 252Cf source (109 neutr/s). It is shown that identification of sections with the absence of adhesive is possible only at <1.5 mm thickness of adhesive layer. At 0.17-0.2 mm thickness it is necessary to introduce contrasting additions (Gd2O3, B2O3) in the glue composition

AbstractAbstract
[en] The oil consumption of a turbocharged, aftercooled direct-injection truck diesel engine was measured using a tritium-tracer technique. The advantages of the method over other chemical and radioactive tracers are described, and supplemented with data from radioanalysis of tritiated oils. As a proportion of fuel consumption, the oil consumption was shown to range from <0.1% to >0.4% depending upon the engine's load and speed, with the highest consumption at idle and at full load conditions. The mass consumption rate ranged from 6 g/h at light load, low speed to 230 g/h at full load, rated speed. The contribution of consumed oil to another truck engine's particulate-bound hydrocarbon emission was shown to be greatest at light and intermediate loads and negligible at high loads

AbstractAbstract
[en] Advantages and possibilities of radioizotope methods for measuring humidity and density of rocks are considered. Block-diagram of radioisotope moisture and density gage and basic performances of native and some foreign radioisotope gages are presented. Attention is paid to metrological provision of humidity and density radioisotope measurements of rocks. Use of radioisotope methods and measurement details are discussed. 48 refs.; 74 figs.; 22 tabs

AbstractAbstract
[en] PIXE with a focused proton beam of 30 μm diameter have been used for quantitative trace element analysis of water-trees in XLPE high voltage cable insulation. A major problem in the longevity of underground cables is the premature degradation phenomenon called water treeing. The exact mechanisms of tree initiation and growth are still unclear although many water-trees (especially the so-called bow-tie trees) grow from impurities and voids in the insulation. In agreement with this hypothesis much higher impurity concentrations have been observed in the trees than in the neighbouring insulation. The nature of the impurities vary from tree to tree although sulphur, chlorine and traces of metals always appear to be present. A major problem in the identification of elemental impurities in water-trees is their small size, typically 5 to 200 microns long
