AbstractAbstract
[en] We perform a mass renormalization scheme invariant analysis of the ITEP heavy quarkonium sum rules in terms of the scale invariant mass m-circumflex, thus relating in an unambiguous manner the quarkonium data to the basic QCD parameters m-circumflex and Λ(MS)-bar. Satisfactory predictions are obtained for all low-lying charmonium states, except the scalar and pseudoscalar ones, for 150 MeV < Λ(MS)-bar < 250 MeV. The gluon condensate comes out in average a factor of 3 smaller than the ITEP value. Both expanded and unexpanded ratios are used, yielding similar results. Bottonium sum rules in the vector channel are shown to be consistent with the results of the charmonium sector. 17 refs., 4 tabs. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] According to some theories of gravity, antimatter will fall faster than matter in the earth's gravitational field. An experiment to measure the gravitational force on the antiproton is under construction. Antiprotons of a few MeV from the LEAR facility of CERN will be slowed down and caught in a large Penning electromagnetic trap. They will then be cooled and transferred to Penning cooling and launching traps. The gravitational acceleration will be measured by time of flight in a drift tube shielding stray electric fields, and will be compared with that measured for H- ions. Progress on a number of fronts is described. (orig.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] By generalizing the notion of self-duality for chiral currents and gauge fields to Nambu-Goto membranes, we exhibit a remarkable class of self-dual classical closed bosonic p-branes in n spacetime dimensions. The latter exist whenever a p-fold vector cross-product can be defined in Rn. Their connections to generalized Cauchy-Riemann analyticity, to exceptional geometries and supermembranes in critical dimensions 7 and 8 in particular are discussed. (orig.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] We formulate a fermionic Dirichlet problem on a cylinder for each of the various sectors of the spinning string. We find solutions using a generalization of Green's theorem. The Green functions are given, via a 'doubling trick', in terms of Green functions on a torus. This explains the appearance of elliptic functions in expressions for the corresponding string propagators. (orig.)

[en] The Green-Schwarz action for the heterotic string is quantized in a super-Poincare covariant gauge. The gauge-fixed action is completely quadratic and corresponds to a free conformal theory. The theory has a correct counting of degrees of freedom. The conformal anomaly vanishes. (orig.)

[en] The mechanical properties of macroscopic electromagnetically coupled string models in a flat or curved background are treated using a covariant formalism allowing the construction of a duality transformation that relates the category of uniform ''electric'' string models, constructed as the (nonconducting) charged generalisation of ordinary uncoupled (violin type) elastic strings, to a category of ''magnetic'' string models comprising recently discussed varieties of ''superconducting cosmic strings''. AbstractAbstract
[en] The basic ideas of the factorial moment analysis of intermittency in particle physics are shortly reviewed and the connection to a set of commonly used scaling indices for fractal objects, the generalized dimensions, is established. The effect of a random superposition of frractal distributions on the strength of the intermittency signal is studied by means of a simple multifractal one-parameter model. We observe a weakening of intermittency with increasing number of fractal sources within one event. This result might be useful for the interpretation of recent experimental data on this subject. [en] We investigate a conformally invariant solution of the SU(2) x SU(2) chiral Wess-Zumino model in two-dimensional space--time. We determine exactly the anomalous dimensions of all fields, the structure constants of the operator algebra, and the four-point correlation functions
