AbstractAbstract
[en] A long-term investigation is presently underway to assess the overall performance of the modern design of fin keels for sailing yachts. An ultimate goal is to determine the specific advantages for such designs with respect to a centre-board configuration with outside ballast. The present preliminary studies were carried out to determine the basic performance of a typical fin keel shape for various values of leeway angle. A second aspect was to determine the effect upon this baseline performance of a number of endplates of varying sizes and shapes. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] In this paper the transient diffraction of an elastic wave by an extending but branching crack is considered. The incident wave is a plane horizontally-polarized wave. It is assumed that crack division is generated at the instant that the tip of a stationary crack is struck. The original length of the crack is therefore immaterial for small times, and the analytical work can be simplified by considering a semi-infinite crack. Size effects become important for later times. The two new cracks tips are are assumed to propagate at different but constant velocities under different arbitrary angles with the original crack plane. The dependence of the elasto-dynamic stress intensity factors on the crack tip velocities and the angles of branching is examined

[en] This paper summarizes the details of a project to evaluate the impact of the selection of different parameters on wind tunnel pressure measurement results. The objective is to provide an estimate of the 'errors' in the pressure coefficient values obtained by using different values of measurement and data acquisition parameters. This particular interest stems from the need to determine the test parameters for the evaluation of wind pressures acting on building models in the Building Aerodynamics Lab of the Centre for building studies (CBS). AbstractAbstract
[en] Since the lubricating oil for compressor is in direct contact with the refrigerant vapor, some oil is discharged with the vapor during the normal operation. The presence of oil in refrigeration vapor is known to have an influence on the heat-transfer performance of condensers; however, little information is available on the subject at present. It is therefore essential to quantitatively and qualitatively investigate the effects of the refrigerant-oil mixture on condensation heat transfer as the condenser plays a major role in the refrigerant system. Such is the objective of this empirical study. (author)

[en] The flat-convex lenticular wings have a very interesting polar-diagram, with a big relative thickness, good for partial static lifting force by introduction of light gas. But the longitudinal balance can be easily realized only with a notable decentring for the load. The theoretical study of stability conditions, in horizontal propulsed flight, as in gliding without engine power, gives the localization of a balance center, different of the gravity center, and the calculation of an optimal centring, function of a diagram-family cm(i) established on computer. In this new calculation, described in this paper, the relative of static lifting force is one of the principal parameters. A 16 mm coloured movie in annex shows the flight tests with a motorized wireless-controlled scale-model, realized according to the theory. This experiments give proof of aeronautical possibilities of this flat-convex lenticular lighted air-ship, with the name of: 'flying turtle' project. (author)
