AbstractAbstract
[en] This book composes the works received for the 1st Ibero-Latin American and the Caribbean Congress on Medical Physics. There are 68 works which represent a sample of the recent advances of the medical physics which are indicators about the level of development of the speciality in these regions of the world. Thus, the Congress represents the greatest event of medical physics of Ibero-Latin America and the Caribbean besides its consolidation and regional organization. The book also contains useful counsels for the education, yours researches and the daily hospitable practice. (Author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The IAEA Report No. 115 recommends that each country or region can establish levels of absorbed doses for each radiographic technique employed in diagnostic. assuming the extended and expensive of this purpose, we have been to begin in a first step with the dentistry area, in order to estimate the dose levels received at crystalline and thyroid level in infants that go to an important public institution in our country to realize panoramic and cephalic radiographs. This work will serve to justify and impel a quality assurance program in Venezuela on the dentistry area which includes aspects such as training for the medical lap referring the justification of the radiological practice, optimization of X-ray units to produce an adequate image quality that delivers to patient an absorbed dose as much lower as reasonably it can be reached without diagnostic detriment. AbstractAbstract
[en] The Synovectomy by Neutron capture has as purpose the treatment of the rheumatoid arthritis, illness which at present does not have a definitive curing. This therapy requires a neutron source for irradiating the articulation affected. The energy spectra and the intensity of these neutrons are fundamental since these neutrons induce nuclear reactions of capture with Boron-10 inside the articulation and the freely energy of these reactions is transferred at the productive tissue of synovial liquid, annihilating it. In this work it is presented the neutron spectra results obtained with moderator packings of spherical geometry which contains in its center a Pu239 Be source. The calculations were realized through Monte Carlo method. The moderators assayed were light water, heavy water base and the both combination of them. The spectra obtained, the average energy, the neutron total number by neutron emitted by source, the thermal neutron percentage and the dose equivalent allow us to suggest that the moderator packing more adequate is what has a light water thickness 0.5 cm (radius 2 cm) and 24.5 cm heavy water (radius 26.5 cm). [en] In this work is proposed the application of the Onditas transformation to evaluate the characteristics of frequency levels of the image of a transversal cutting of an activity homogeneous distribution source. The objective is to confirm if it is possible to separate the distinct factors that determine the characteristics of this image: lack of correctness by attenuation, rings presence and statistic noise, in the different levels of frequency resolution. AbstractAbstract
[en] In this work it is presented an application of the cause-effect diagram method or Ichikawa method identifying the elements that allow to diminish accidents when the radioactive materials are transported. It is considered the transport of hazardous materials which include radioactive materials in the period: December 1996 until March 1997. Among the identified elements by this method it is possible to mention: the road type, the radioactive source protection, the grade driver responsibility and the preparation that the OEP has in the radioactive material management. It is showed the differences found between the country inner roads and the Mexico City area. (Author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The recommended principles in the 'Comprehensive QA for radiation oncology: Report of AAPM Radiation Therapy Committee Task Group 40', TG-40, have been the base for implementation of the Quality Assurance Program of a modern Radiotherapy service. During its application has been necessary: to initiate its implementation before the equipment installation, assuming the costs of the contracts of the qualified personnel, realizing an initial investment adequate for equipment acquisition necessary for acceptation, commissioning and routinary control, the experienced formation of the personnel in the protocol philosophy, establishing procedures for day by day process which would allow the retrofeeding, the elaboration of templates and opening to changes and adjustments according to the necessities. The experience of two years had been demonstrated that the TG-40: a) It is feasible to be implemented but sometimes no strict totally and it is essential to have qualified personnel and the necessary material resources; b) It does not contains all the necessary for its practical implementation and must be completing with procedures and routine formats which facilitate their application; c) It allows the detection and opportune failure correction in the process; d) It is a continuous process that does not finishes. AbstractAbstract
[en] The objective in this work is to show how the uncertainty is possible to know in the determination of the absorbed dose in Co 60 photon beams and to establish in a rational form, tolerance levels for this. It is took as base the spanish protocol of dosimetry in Radiotherapy. We have been centered in a Co 60 beam. We utilized the statistical theory of little samples. We allowed to suggest a new approach about the treatment of the tolerance levels and the uncertainty of the measurement. After two years of experience in the practical hospitable application we have gotten to put around 1 % uncertainty in the absolute dosimetry of the Co 60 beam. The presented protocol allows to execute the accuracy requirements in the determination of absorbed doses. (Author)

[en] In the present communication it is presented the results of the simulation utilizing the Penelope code (Penetration and Energy loss of Positrons and Electrons) in several applications of radiotherapy which can be the radioactive sources simulation: 192 Ir, 125 I, 106 Ru or the electron beams simulation of a linear accelerator Siemens KDS. The simulations presented in this communication have been on computers of type Pentium PC of 100 throughout 300 MHz, and the times of execution were from some hours until several days depending of the complexity of the problem. It is concluded that Penelope is a very useful tool for the Monte Carlo calculations due to its great ability and its relative handling facilities. (Author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] An external proton beam has been obtained in the TANDAR accelerator with radiological and biomedical purposes. The protons have excellent physical properties for their use in radiotherapy allowing a very good accuracy in the dose spatial distribution inside the tissue so in the side direction as in depth owing to the presence of Bragg curve. The advantage of the accuracy in the dose localization with proton therapy is good documented (M. Wagner, Med. Phys. 9, 749 (1982); M. Goitein and F. Chen, Med. Phys. 10, 831 (1983); M.R. Raju, Rad. Res. 145, 391 (1996)). It was obtained external proton beams with energies between 15-25 MeV, currents between 2-10 p A and a uniform transversal sections of 40 mm2 approximately. It was realized dosimetric evaluations with CR39 and Makrofol foliation. The irradiations over biological material contained experiences In vivo with laboratory animals, cellular and bacterial crops. It was fixed the optimal conditions of position and immobilization of the Wistar rats breeding for the In vivo studies. It was chosen dilutions and sowing techniques adequate for the exposition at the cellular and bacterial crops beam. (Author)
