AbstractAbstract
[en] This paper provides some historical background on the commercial production of radioisotopes in Canada, and the evolution of the present vendor, MDS Nordion. The chief isotopes are molybdenum 99, iodine 131, and cobalt 60. Cobalt 60 for medical sterilization and irradiation is considered to be a significant growing market. Food irradiation is believed to be a big marketing opportunity, although attempts to popularize it have so far met with limited success. Candu reactors supply the bulk of the world's 60Co supply. Eighty percent of the world's 99Mo supply for medical imaging comes from Canada, and is at present produced in NRU Reactor, which is to be replaced by two Maple reactors coming into production in 1999 and 2000

AbstractAbstract
[en] The production of tomatoes in Sri Lanka is hampered by many problems. Tomato is an economic crop which is nutritious and has export potential. The major constraint for tomato production is Bacterial Wilt caused by Pseudomonas Solanacearum. A study was initiated with the obnjective of finding tomato genotype having resistance to bacterial wilt. The seeds of the varity, Solar Set which is highly susceptible to bacterial wilt was exposed to irradiation from Co 60 source after adjusting moisture content to 14%. The dosese given were 0, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50 krad. The seeds were sown in plastic trays and germination count was taken after 3 days. The LD50 value for the induction of mutants in tomato variety Solar Set is observed to be 35.6 Kr and it is the best dose value for the induction of beneficial mutants in tomato variety, Solar Set by irradiation

AbstractAbstract
[en] The surface coating of mosaic parquet flooring has been done using electron beam and UV irradiation in a pilot scale and technically successful. Economic analysis of the coating process will be discussed in this paper. Four kinds of irradiated parquet flooring were used for comparing costs and important factors on the analysis such as capital, production cost, selling price, break-event point, payout time and internal rate of return. The results showed there the higher quality of the products, the higher are its production cost and selling price. The selling price of irradiated parquet flooring per m2 for process A, B, C and D were Rp. 20,700; Rp. 23,900; Rp. 24,500; and Rp. 25,000 at the lowest profit level of 10% and RP. 25,500; Rp. 34,700; Rp. 35,500; and Rp. 36,400 at the highest profit level of 150% of the fixed capital. The total capital required were Rp. 1.9 billion up to 3.3 billion. (author). 5 refs, 9 tabs

AbstractAbstract
[en] Current market segments for reactor produced radioisotopes are developed and reported from a review of current literature. Specific radioisotopes studied in is report are the primarily selected from those with major medical or industrial markets, or those expected to have strongly emerging markets. Relative market sizes are indicated. Special emphasis is given to those radioisotopes that are best matched to production in high flux reactors such as the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory or the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. A general bibliography of medical and industrial radioisotope applications, trends, and historical notes is included

AbstractAbstract
[en] Immobilization processes involve conversion of wastes into homogeneous solid forms to reduce the potential dispersion and migration of their radionuclides from the waste materials to the surrounding during transport and disposal (1,2). To overcome the disadvantages of cementation and bituminization techniques (3), different types of polymer matrices (4-10) have been suggested to immobilize intermediate-and low - level radioactive wastes and to achieve a clear improvement in both immobilization process and final waste-form properties. The present study aims at optimizing the process of immobilization of simulating borate waste in different types of polymer by studying the different factors expected to play a role in the characterization of the final waste/polymer products. 6 FIG., 10 TAB

AbstractAbstract
[en] Nowadays, commercial oxidizers are either very costly or very complex and tedious to set up. A low cost improvised sample oxidizer was designed using available laboratory materials. Costing only P2,600, this can be substitute expensive commercial oxidizers, where accuracy in results and sample recovery are at par than the latter's. Use of extra gases was also eliminated while electrical consumption cut down to almost nil. Besides being inexpensive, easy operation and the absence of routine tedious calibration and shutdown procedures are its major advantages. Its efficiency is higher for small amount of samples, higher quench indicating parameter and lower absorber volume. It showed a very high 95% carbon-14 recovery and 52% tritium recovery, as well as completely negligible sample spillover. (auth.). 6 refs.; 4 figs
