AbstractAbstract
[en] A technique is described for fabricating minature, high-density capsules of curium-244 oxide contained in three concentric jackets of metallic gold (or silver), with the outer surface being free of alpha contamination. The completed capsules are right circular cylinders 0.2500-inch diameter and 0.125-inch tall, with each level of containment soldered (or brazed) closed. A typical capsule would contain approx. 70 mg of 244Cm (5.7 Ci) mixed with 120 mg of gold powder in the form of a cermet wafer clad in three concentric, 0.010-inch thick, liquid tight jackets. This method of fabrication eliminates voids between the jackets and produces a minimum size, maximum density capsule. Cermet densities of 11.5 g/cc were obtained, with an overall density of 17.3 g/cc for the finished capsule

AbstractAbstract
[en] The optical constants, n,k, of liquid urania were determined from reflectivity measurements with plane-polarized light. Measurements were made with an integrating-sphere laser reflectometer in the wavelength range 450-750 nm at temperatures between 3000 and 4000 K. Consistent results have been obtained for different angles of incidence. The optical constants show little variation with the wavelength and temperature. Liquid urania proves to be opaque to radiation in the whole spectral range studied. Average values of n = 1.7 and k = 0.8 are given for the temperature range 3100-3600 K. From this result it is concluded that internal thermal radiation cannot cause a significant increase in thermal conductivity urania upon melting. (orig.)

(orig.)Primary Subject

AbstractAbstract
[en] Glass substrates having uniformly distributed microscopic grains on the surfaces are useful to make long-lived carbon stripper foils for heavy ions. A method of surface treatment of glass substrates to form the surface structure is described. This method consists of precipitation of glass components, such as soda, onto the surfaces in a hot and humid atmosphere and a fogging treatment of forming microscopic grains of the precipitated substances. Some results of studies on the treatment conditions are also presented. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Granulates are produced from As2S3, As2O5, alloys of selenic/tellurium, or compound systems based on chalcogenides. For this purpose the original substance consisting of As and Se is filled as loose material into the reactor of an equipment that has got an electric heating and a mixer-settler for homogenizing the melting phase of the mixture. In this way a product is formed meeting the requirements for a photoconductor compound to be evaporated in high-vacuum. (DG)

(DG)Original Title

AbstractAbstract
[en] Highly anisotropic critical scattering associated with the transition at T/sub N/ = 49.5 K to the type-I antiferromagnetic structure has been observed in uranium nitride. The transverse susceptibility is found to be unobservably small. The longitudinal susceptibility diverges at T/sub N/ and its anisotropy shows that the spins within the (001) ferromagnetic sheets of the [001] domain are much more highly correlated than they are with the spins lying in adjacent (001) sheets. The correlation range within the sheets is much greater than that expected for a Heisenberg system with the same T/sub N/. The rod-like scattering extended along the spin and domain direction is reminiscent of two-dimensional behavior. The results are inconsistent with a simple localized model and may reflect the itinerant nature of the 5f electrons
