AbstractAbstract
[en] Results of numerical investigation of absorption of HF-field of axially asymmetric modes (m=1; 2) in the Alfven frequency range in an inhomogeneous plasma cylinder with parameters close to those existing in modern tokamaks, are given. It is shown that absorption of HF-field of axially asymmetric modes is determined by the transformation of HF-field, created by the screw circuit, to the short-wave Alfven mode. This mode brings about heating of plasma electrons due to Landau damping. The data are given on the distribution of the HF-field components and absorbed dose density over the radius. A strong effect of the direction of HF-field propagation over the azimuth on the absorption magnitude is found; this effect is associated with the plasma gyrotropic nature

AbstractAbstract
[en] The linear theory of resistive ballooning modes in tokamaks at a high plasma pressure is developed. It is shown that, along with previously known threshold-free electrostatic mode strongly localized over the filament radius, two more electromagnetic modes exist that are less localized and can be more dangerous in an actual experiment. Stability criteria of these modes are found, their increments are calculated. It is shown that the fast resistive threshold ballooning mode can develop in the second stability zone of ideal ballooning modes

AbstractAbstract
[en] Recent progress in the conceptual design of inertial fusion reaction chambers and power plants is reviewed. A discussion of expected operating parameters and a brief historical perspective are provided to organize the rich array of chamber and driver concepts. The technical feasibility of several reaction chamber concepts is discussed, along with technical issues that require future analysis, experiment, and development. Where these chambers have been integrated into a power plant design, the characteristics are described. Finally, requirements on the future development of inertial fusion reactor technology are discussed

AbstractAbstract
[en] A small experimental thermonuclear installation TM-4A specially designed for foreign nuclear research centres is described. The TM-4A is a Tokamak device intended for studying physical processes in a high-temperature plasma with the maximum electron concentration of about 5X1013 cm-3, electron temperature of 700 eV, ion temperature of about 250 eV. The TM-4A installation has the following specifications: 0.53 m large torus radius, 0.1 m discharge chamber radius, 120 kA max. plasma current, 0.015 s plasma confinement duration, 120 s interval between discharges, 4T longitudinal magnetic field strength, 1x10-8 Torr max. pressure in discharge chamber. The main systems of the device: electromagnetic and vacuum systems, gas exhaustion and injection complexes, power supplies for magnet coils, diagnostics, data acquisition, processing and storage systems are described in brief

AbstractAbstract
[en] Nuclear-physical aspects of thermonuclear fusion processes are discussed. One is considered the problem of measurements and theoretical extrapolations of cross sections for very low-energy nuclear reactions, the problem of advanced thermonuclear fuels and the concept and application of chain catalytic reactions. Also the nuclear-physical aspects of blanket reactions and plasma diagnostics are described

AbstractAbstract
[en] The Stark broadening of the line ArI 13406,6 A (3d-4f) was measured in an argon plasma with an impurity of hidrogen. The plasma was a pulsed linear discharge 25 cm long, 5 cm in diameter and operated at a charging voltage of 6 KV with a peak current of 20 KA. The profiles were measured in a shoot to shoot basis using a 75 cm monochromator provided with an InSb detector operated at liquid nitrogen temperatures. The Stark broadening of the Balmer beta line (HB) of hydrogen was used for determination of the electron densities, which ranged from 7 x 1015 to 2 x 1016 cm-3. The Saha equations were used to obtain the electron temperatures, which ranged from 1.2 x 104 to 3.0 x 104 K. The results are compared with a semiclassical calculation for the width of the line

AbstractAbstract
[en] This paper is an overview of the U.S. Magnetic Fusion Program. A new program plan, issued in February 1985, defines four key issues for fusion: developing an improved confinement system, understanding burning plasmas, materials, and nuclear technology. The implementation of the program will rely strongly on foreign collaboration. Some recent technical highlights are also presented

AbstractAbstract
[en] Over the past 10 yr, a number of studies have been developed for fusion power plants of various types (tokamaks, mirrors, etc.) complete with figures of merit such as cost estimates and estimates of the cost of generating electricity (COE). Each of these designs involves unresolved physics and engineering problems which, it is assumed, will eventually be worked out. Because of such uncertainties the figures of merit associated with such designs are not to be compared as absolute measures of worth but as relative indicators of progress within a given concept type. As part of Grumman's involvement in fusion energy development, an effort has been undertaken to compare economic indicators from the referenced studies in order to determine the cost trend in recent reactor design activities
