AbstractAbstract
[en] The paper examines the training in radiation protection received by the various occupationally exposed groups in New South Wales. Consideration is given to the content and relevance of the various training programmes available. It is considered that the increasing usage of radiation requires that particular emphasis be made as to the risks from low doses of radiation. It is concluded that an overall policy on the training of persons working with radiation is required, and a number of necessary features of such training are proposed

AbstractAbstract
[en] A single pulmonary lavage in the Syrian hamster stimulated the synthesis of both the surface-active dipalmitoyl lecithin and its proposed precursor, the unsaturated lecithins. The rate of breakdown of the two types of lung lecithin did not appear to be greatly affected by the lavage. The data were consistent with the view that alveolar lecithins are secreted by the tissue into the alveoli and that unsaturated lecithins are the precursors of dipalmitoyl lecithin

AbstractAbstract
[en] The authors gave 22 chemical workers neurological, psychiatric, and neuropsychological examinations and placed them in one of two groups according to their degree of exposure to trimethyltin chloride spillage during January 1978. Other chemicals to which they had been exposed were dimethyltin dichloride and methyl chloride. Specific and nonspecific symptoms of intoxication of the CNS showed a significantly greater frequency in the highly exposed group, including cycles of depression and destructive rage, each lasting a few hours. These observations should alert diagnosticians to this type of occupational exposure

[en] The objectives of activities related to policy support on radiation protection is: (1) to support and advise the Belgian authorities on specific problems concerning existing and potential hazards from exposure to ionizing radiation in normal and accidental situations,;(2) to improve and support nuclear emergency-response decisions in industrial areas from an economical point of view. The main achievements for 1997 are described

AbstractAbstract
[en] Present and past industrial practices, energy production and recycling of wastes can result in an intentional or unintentional exposure of workers and members of the public to elevated levels of the natural radiation environment (NRE). Reviewing a variety of NRE-sources the most important ones with regard to individual and collective risk are: indoor radon daughter exposure and the use of peat as fuel. An integral approach to NRE-control above a level of insignificance of ≤0,2 mSv/year is proposed. 32 refs., 1 fig., 4 tabs. (Author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] This book is based on a two volume technical monograph entitled 'The Environmental Consequences of Nuclear War: I. Physical and Atmospheric Effects; and II. Ecological and Agricultural Effects', published in 1985. This volume is a popular account of the larger study, the objective being to reach the widest possible audience. The eleven chapters deal with the environmental consequences of nuclear war, fire, blast and other immediate effects, smoke and dust, climatic consequences, chemical changes in the atmosphere, radiation and fallout (this chapter is indexed separately), the biological effects, agricultural and ecosystems after nuclear war and finally, the human response. AbstractAbstract
[en] The general state of radiation protection in medical X-ray diagnosis in China is described. Its current status and progress is briefly introduced, and a preliminary suggestion for the later working is proposed. It is pointed out that the condition of occupational radiation protection from X-ray diagnosis has greatly been improved. From now on, more attention should be paid to the radiation protection for the patients. It is also described that medical exposure should follow the main principles of the ICRP dose limitation system, particularly the principles of justification and optimization

AbstractAbstract
[en] Following the Chernobyl accident in 1986, a group of experts from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) met in France to discuss and develop the basic principles of a global environmental radiation monitoring network (GERMON). The basic functions of this network were to provide regular reports on environmental radiation levels and to be in a position to provide reliable and accurate radiation measurements on a quick and accurate radiation measurements on a quick turnaround basis in the event of a major radiation release. By 1992, although 58 countries had indicated an interest in becoming a part of the GERMON system, only 16 were providing data on a regular basis. This paper traces the history of GERMON from its inception in 1987 through its activities during 1993-4. It details the objectives of the network, describes functions, lists its participants, and presents obstacles in the current network. The paper examines the data requirements for radiological emergency preparedness and offers suggestions for the current system. The paper also describes the growing need for such a network. To add a domestic perspective, the authors present a summary of the environmental monitoring information system that was used by the NRC in 1986 in its analyses of the Chernobyl incident. Then we will use this 1986 experience to propose a method for the use of GERMON should a similar occasion arise in the future
