[en] A hot cell facility has been recently commissioned in the Radiochemistry Laboratory, Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Kalpakkam with the objective of carrying out post - irradiation studies on fast reactor fuels as well as PHWR fuels. The hot cell facility has several novel features such as a double containment system with high purity argon atmosphere in the containment box, low probabilities of contamination or radiation exposure to operating personnel and economy in both capital and operating costs. This report describes the different concepts used to achieve a high degree of leaktightness in the stainless steel containment boxes as well as in the cells and the development of special gaskets and O-rings like formed gaskets and co-seals. [en] Thirteen different samples of raw materials used in manufacturing of cement were collected from south Elgabalain area were Rabak cement raw materials available. The samples were crushed, ground and sieved. The concentration of the following elements and compound were determined using x-ray fluorescence technique (XRF) : TiO2, Fe2O3, MnO2, CaO, SrO, K2O, CO, Cu, Zn, As, Y, Zr, and Nb. XRF technique is found to be the most suitable one because it is non destructive, more rapid and simultaneous multi-element determined tool. (Author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Effective Lagrangians involving nucleons coupled to scalar and vector fields are investigated within the framework of relativistic mean-field theory. The study presents the traditional Walecka model and different kinds of scalar derivative coupling suggested by Zimanyi and Moszkowski (ZM). It is shown that the equations of state for all these modified ZM models are soft. The real part of the optical potential for these models is obtained. When compared with the unusual ZM model, the modified models present the peculiarity of giving simultaneously a smaller nucleon effective mass and a smaller incompressibility. This can be explained through the mesonic nonlinear scalar-vector coupling contained in these modified models. (author)

The study presents the traditional Walecka model and different kinds of scalar derivative coupling suggested by Zimanyi and Moszkowski. The incompressibility (presented in an analytical form), scalar potential, and vector potential at the saturation point of nuclear matter are compared for these models. The real optical potential for the models are calculated and one of the models fits well the experimental curve from-50 to 400 MeV while also gives a soft equation of state. By varying the coupling constants and keeping the saturation point of nuclear matter approximately fixed, only the Walecka model presents a first order phase transition of finite temperature at zero density. (author)

[en] In the United States, coal provided 56 percent of the electricity generated in 1992. Nuclear energy was the next largest contributor, supplying 22 percent. Natural gas provided 9 percent, while hydro-electric and renewables together supplied another 9 percent. Currently, the 109 nuclear power plants in the U.S. have an overall generating capacity of 99,000 MWe. To improve efficiency, safety, and performance, the lessons of 30 years of experience with nuclear powerplants are being incorporated into design criteria for the next generation of U.S. plants. The new Advanced Light Water Reactor plants will feature simpler designs, which will enable more cost-effective construction and maintenance. To enhance safety, design margins are being increased, and human factors are being considered and incorporated into the designs

Over the past 20 years, this unique Canadian nuclear technology has made a worldwide presence, In addition to 22 CANDU reactors in Canada, there are also two in India, one in Pakistan, one in Argentina, four in Korea and five in Romania. CANDU advancements are based on evolutionary plant improvements. They consist of system performance improvements, design technology improvements and research and development in support of advanced nuclear power. Given the good performance of CANOU plants, it is important that this CANDU operating experience be incorporated into new and repeat designs

[en] New experimental data obtained with the FOPI detector at SIS for the Au + Au heavy ion collisions at 400 A.MeV incident energy are presented. Sideward flow and nuclear stopping are studied as a function of the centrality of the collisions. In order to study the nuclear in-medium effects, these results are compared with the predictions of two different QMD versions. The first one offers a fully microscopic calculation of the cross-sections and potential in the G-matrix formalism and naturally includes the in-medium effects. The second one uses a standard Skyrme potential plus a momentum dependent term in order to mimic the in-medium effects. (author)

[en] The isolated mesencephalic and striatal cells were irradiated in a dose-range of 0.25 to 3 Gy followed by 3 day of culture. The proportion of monopolar, bipolar, tripolar and multipolar cell population was not obviously modified by irradiation. The processes length was similar to controls, except after 3 Gy exposure, for monopolar and bipolar mesencephalic cells and the tripolar striatal cells where it was increased. In these populations, only cells with long processes seemed to survive. (author)
