Seismic activity and deep nuclear waste disposal: the relevant questions
AbstractAbstract
[en] When assessing the aptitude of a site to receive a deep nuclear-waste repository, seismic activity should be taken into account. This will be based on: (1) seismicity as an indication of the level of ''tectonic stability'' at global, regional and local scales; (2) potential earthquake damage during the construction and operation phases, and the problem of designing a suitable facility; (3) an evaluation of the possible changes that might affect the geological barrier for waste confinement during the post-closure phase.
