Programme for Decommissioning of Multipurpose Nuclear Submarines in the North-West of Russia. Agenda item 8 (Paper in Russian)

The paper Programme for Decommissioning of Multipurpose Nuclear Submarines in North-West Russia by V Shishkin from the Institute of Power Engineering, Russia, described the concept and programme for complex submarine dismantlement for 1999-2010. The key efforts were defueling of submarines and relocation of SNF in transport casks to a reprocessing plant along with the dismantlement of submarine hulls to three-compartment reactor units to be temporarily stored in floating conditions. The problem of numerous floating reactor units was to be solved with the creation of a storage facility for reactor compartments whose funding was expected from international partners. Creation of regional centres for conditioning of legacy RW was another important task to be implemented. Over sixty decommissioned multipurpose nuclear submarines were to be dismantled to accomplish the programme.
