Working Material of the CEG Workshop on Problems of Multi-Purpose Nuclear Submarine Dismantlement in North-West Russia. Materials Presented to the Workshop

Description

The CEG workshop was attended by representatives from 10 countries: Belgium, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Russian Federation, United Kingdom, United States of America, and the European Commission. Dismantlement of Russian multipurpose nuclear submarines was a new international initiative launched by CEG members in addition to the USA-Russia Cooperative Threat Reduction Program that had dealt with the dismantlement of more than thirty strategic nuclear submarines since 1992. Russia presented to CEG members the Programme for Nuclear Submarine Dismantlement through 2010. The workshop reviewed the key aspects and problems and plans for multipurpose nuclear submarine dismantlement. The CEG members studied the status of the Russian submarine dismantlement complex, facilities for spent nuclear fuel (SNF) and radioactive waste (RW) management together with the dismantlement infrastructure of shipyards. The workshop noted that the nuclear submarine dismantlement complex had been significantly enhanced due to already completed projects funded by the USA and Norway, including the construction of SNF unloading facilities and equipment for SNF relocation, creation of liquid RW treatment plants, and other infrastructure enhancements. Since 2003, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Norway and United Kingdom started a number of notable projects with Russia for dismantlement of decommissioned multipurpose nuclear submarines funded by.
