Description

Micropole (MP) undulators, i.e., undulators with submillimeter periods, offer many advantages over conventionally scaled insertion devices. Among these are the possible generation of highly coherent x-rays on economical, low energy storage rings or linacs, and the opening up of previously unavailable gamma ray ranges on higher energy storage rings. Over the last year or so, an intensive research and development effort has been in progress at the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory (SSRL) in the analysis, practical construction, and low energy operation of magnetostatic short-period devices. In this talk we present an overview of our studies and research, focusing on the current and evolving status of this new field of insertion device technology. (author). 40 refs, 26 figs, 2 tabs
