Description

X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (microanalysis by EDS) of composite refractories were carried out to determine the changes in the chemistry of these refractories during the service in continuous casting. The chemical interaction of alumina graphite composite refractories with iron and steel melts was determined. Alumina graphite refractories are multiphase complex refractory materials. The metal droplets in the reaction zone originate from the melt and dissolve Si generated from the reduction of SiO/sub 2/ and dissolution of metallic Si. The silica in the fine matrix in alumina-graphite reacts with C and increases Si content in the iron and steel melts. (author)
