SMR roadmap technology working group

  • 1. Canadian Nuclear Labs., Chalk River, Ontario (Canada)
  • 2. New Brunswick Power, Fredericton, New Brunswick (Canada)

Description

The mandate of the working group is to identify SMR technology categories that could meet stakeholder requirements regarding: size, energy output, technology readiness, deployment timelines, geographical considerations, and supply chain, analyze SMR technology categories against Canadian SMR end-user requirements and identify key gaps in research and development for preferred technology categories. There are applicable technologies and Canada has the key capabilities. A demonstration is needed. A well-integrated and coordinated capability building and R&D program is needed. Not all technologies offer the same benefits to Canada. Fleet approach is the logical end state. SMRs will require fuels not currently used widely in Canada; HA-LEU supply chain: paradigm shift in manufacturing/construction.
