Description

The First International conference on generation IV and small reactors (G4SR-1) was organized by the Canadian Nuclear Society, in co-operation with Canadian Nuclear Laboratories and was held in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada on November 6-8, 2018. Building on the momentum of increasing interest in partnership in SMR development in Canada, in both governments and the private sector, this International Conference's theme was 'Meeting the Challenges to Deploy Next Generation Advanced Reactors and SMRs' in fostering low-carbon energy innovation for Canada and the world. As such, this conference was an international forum for the industry and stakeholders to work together to identify obstacles and opportunities, and seek solutions through dialogue, engagement and collaboration. It covered topics of interest to designers, operators, researchers, analysts, policy makers involved in the design, development and deployment of Generation IV and small reactors for research and power generation purposes. Topics included: safety and risk assessment and licensing; research and development support for advanced reactors; SMR first-of-a-kind (FOAK) prototype testing; waste management for SMR; SMR manufacturing and supply chain; economics; social licence for deployment; skills development strategy; public/private partnership model; accident tolerant fuel (ATF); operation of FOAK SMR; and, international development of SMR.
