Description
For BWR fuel there is a clear trend to 9x9 and 10x10 arrays. Today's PWR fuel market focuses mainly on the 17x17 fuel assembly arrays. Considerable progress has been achieved with BWR and PWR fuel with respect to fuel reliability, increased discharge burnup, improved thermal margins, and operational flexibility. The most important technological problems still facing fuel vendors relate to failures due to severe secondary degradation (BWR) and grid-to-rod fetting (PWR). (HP)
