Description
Gel processing has produced the lead fee low Tc Bi/sub 2/Sr/sub 2/CaCu/sub 2/O/sub x/ (2212) phase of the bismuth cuprate superconductors with T/sub c/ of 93 K. A gel of molar composition Bi:Sr:Ca:Cu (2:2:2:4) was decomposed to carbonates of Sr, Ca and oxides of Cu and Bi at low temperature and produced a 2212 phase along with others phases at 800 deg. C via complex intermediate states. Sintering at higher temperature 845 deg. C led to the formation of the high volume fraction of the low T/sub c/, Bi/sub 2/Sr/sub 2/CaCu/sub 2/O/sub x/ (2212) phase. The conditions of geletation and conversion of gel to 2212 phase were studied by thermal analysis (DTA/TG) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) made AC magnetic susceptibility measurements. (author)
