Extraction and determination of copper in brine and biological materials with 4-(chlorophenyl)-2-phenyl-5-thiazole acetic acid using atomic absorption spectroscopy

Description

The extraction of copper complex with 4-(4-chloro phenyl)-2-phenyl-5-thioazoleacetic acid (HCPTA) has been investigated. The Cu-CPTA complex was extracted in n-butyl acetate and copper was determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometric technique using air-acetylene flame. The quantitative extraction was observed at pH 8.4. The stoichiometric composition of the complex was found to be Cu(CPTA)/sub 2/. The extraction constant was determined to be log K/sub ex/=10.3+- 0.12. Under the optimal experimental conditions the influence of high concentration of various anions (ClO/sub 4/-, F-, NO/sub 3/-, CH/sub 3/-, COO-, SO/sub 4/sup 2-/, SCN/sup -/, C/sub 2/O/sub 4/sup 2-/, CN/sup -/), EDTA and cations (Li/sup +/, K/sup +/, Mg/sub 2+/, Ca/sup +/, Mn/sub 2+/, Fe/sub 3+/, CO/sub 2+/, Ni/sub 2+/, Zn/sub 2/+, Pd/sub 2+/ and Se/sub 4+/) on the extraction of copper has also been studied. The procedure was successfully applied for the determination of copper in brine and biological materials. The reliability of the method was cross checked by analyzing IAEA Standard Reference Material, Copepod MA-A-1, for its copper contents. (author) 5 tabs.; 16 refs
