Keynote: Research and innovation interdisciplinary opportunities and challenges to enable sustainable and decarbonised societies

In his opening speech, Mr. Francois Jacq highlighted the following points: - The societal challenge of combating global warming is becoming ever more apparent, and ever more pressing. To meet it, we will need to make the most of all available means and resources, in particular to implement the transition to a fully carbon-free global and European energy mix. The CEA's vision is of a multi-vector energy system (taking advantage of electricity, heat, and gas including hydrogen), multi-scale and multi-agent (from the local loop to the European scale), within the framework of highly interconnected energy networks. - Nuclear power has a key place in this energy mix of the future, for the success of the energy transition, as a low-carbon, pilot source of energy that contributes to security of supply. The major challenges facing nuclear power today are: - Safety and security - SMR: The light-water SMR for tomorrow and the Gen 4 SMR for after tomorrow; - Flexibility with the growing penetration of intermittent energies; Cogeneration and coupling with heat; A low-carbon source of electricity for the production of hydrogen and beyond for the production of more sophisticated molecules (e-fuel or e-fuel by combining low-carbon hydrogen with CO2 capture towards the 'nuclear refinery'; - Implementing clean-up and dismantling. Nuclear research must therefore be decompartmentalised and multi-disciplinary, incorporating skills that go beyond those of its traditional disciplines. We need the European Union to define broad guidelines for research, to ensure the continued link between research and industrial capacity, and to support initial and continuing training in the nuclear sector. The EURATOM programme remains an essential tool for contributing to these objectives, and for maintaining its position as a key platform for the energy transition.

Dans son discours d'ouverture, Mr Francois Jacq a souligne les points suivants: - Le defi societal que constitue la lutte contre le rechauffement climatique est de plus en plus manifeste, et de plus en plus pressant. Pour y repondre, nous aurons besoin de tirer parti de tous les moyens et ressources disponibles, en particulier pour mettre en oeuvre la transition vers un mix energetique mondial et europeen entierement decarbone. La vision du CEA est celle d'un systeme multi-vecteurs energetiques (soit tirant parti de l'electricite, la chaleur, et du gaz dont l'hydrogene), multiechelles et multi-agents (de la boucle locale a l'echelle europeenne), dans le cadre de reseaux energetiques tres fortement interconnectes. - Le nucleaire a une place cle dans ce mix energetique du futur, pour la reussite de la transition energetique, en tant que source d'energie pilotage, a faibles emissions de carbone, et contribuant a la securite d'approvisionnement. Les grands defis du nucleaire sont a ce jour sont: - La surete et securite - Les SMR: le SMR a eau legere pour demain et le SMR de Gen 4 pour 'apres-demain' - La flexibilite avec la penetration croissante des energies intermittentes; La cogeneration et le couplage avec la chaleur; Une source d'electricite bas carbone pour la production d'hydrogene et au-dela pour la production de molecules plus elaborees (e-fuel ou e-carburant en associant de l'hydrogene bas carbone a de la capture de CO2 vers la 'raffinerie nucleaire'; - Mettre en oeuvre l'assainissement et le demantelement. La recherche nucleaire doit ainsi etre decloisonnee et multidisplinaire, en integrant des competences plus larges que celles de ses disciplines traditionnelles. Nous avons besoin de l'Union europeenne pour definir de grandes lignes directrices pour la recherche, pour assurer la continuite du lien entre recherche et capacite industrielle, et pour accompagner la formation initiale et continue au service du secteur nucleaire. Le programme EURATOM, reste un outil essentiel pour contribuer a ces objectifs, et se maintenir ainsi comme une plateforme incontournable de la transition energetiqueAdditional details
