Description

UNISOR is a unique consortium formed with the help of State and Federal Government, and public and private university funds in the early 1970's to place an isotope separator on-line to the Oak Ridge Isochronous Cyclotron (ORIC). Some of the early experiments concentrated on producing neutron deficient T1, Hg, Au, and Pt isotopes. Heavy-ion beams were used for the first time to produce these nuclei far from β- stability via the (HI,xn) and (HI,pxn) reactions. Mass separated products in a single A-chain were collected onto a moving tape system and transported to detectors for studies of α, β, and γ spectroscopy studies. Some highlights of early UNISOR research are presented. Of special importance were discoveries of shape coexistence and intruder orbitals in light Hg, Au, and Pt isotopes
