Effect of different heat-treated pet coke for the synthesis of graphene oxide

Description

Synthesis and application of GO are very high in demand in the new generation energy world due to its unique chemical and electrical properties. Here, the structure and composition of pet coke have been discussed and it has been used as a low-cost precursor for the bulk synthesis of Graphene Oxide (GO). By controlling the amount of reactive agent (KMnO4, H3PO4, the concentration of H2SO4, H2O2, etc.) and the time needed for the oxidation of pet coke (PC), GO has been synthesized i.e., Modified Hummers' Method. It has been subjected to various analytical processes, such as XRD, Raman analysis, and FE-SEM Analysis. It has been found that high-grade GO was extracted from the graphitized pet coke. The results demonstrate that an ID/IG ratio increases from 0.33 to 0.96, and an XRD spectrum exhibits a high and broad peak at the diffraction angle (20) 10.5° and a minor peak at 42°. FE-SEM images confirms that the surface of the GO has a thin sheet-like structure. PC derived GO can be used for different application. (author)
