Applicability of Monte-Carlo simulation to equipment design of radioactive noble gas monitor

Description
In the nuclear facilities, radioactive noble gas is continuously monitored by using the radioactive noble gas monitor with beta-sensitive plastic scintillation radiation detector. The detection efficiency of the monitor is generally calibrated by using a calibration loop and standard radioactive noble gases such as 85Kr. In this study, the applicability of PHITS to the equipment design of the radioactive noble gas monitor was evaluated by comparing the calculated results to the test results obtained by actual calibration loop tests to simplify the radiation monitor design evaluation. It was confirmed that the calculated results were well matched to the test results of the monitor after the modeling. In addition, the key parameters for equipment design, such as thickness of detector window or depth of the sampler, were also specified and evaluated. (author)
