Description

Tritiated water of thermonuclear origin is a new and very interesting parameter of which the hydrogeologist is making increasing use in the study of various problems. The authors present the results of their work in the following fields: Karst hydrology. In the latitudes in which these studies were conducted, the water from precipitation shows an annual maximum of concentration in June. The authors show how this 'signal' can be used to establish correlations between the losses from an aquifer and resurgence about 30 km away, by means of a series of systematic measurements of the precipitation supplying aquifers and springs. These measurements have been valuable in a trial project involving a gamma-emitting tracer; CETA . (Network for the collection of atmospheric tritiated water). This network was set up with the collaboration of the National Meteorological Service. It is concerned with the collection and measurement of monthly samples collected at 26 stations spread fairly evenly across France. Its purpose is two-fold: Primarily to constitute a 'bank' of samples, or sampling data, for use in any subsequent hydrological studies carried out in France; and secondly, to permit study of the spatial distribution of tritium fall-out. Very interesting results in the form of tritium isoconcentration curves, have disclosed a 'sea/continent effect', whereby tritium concentrations increase as one moves inland. The authors hope that these measurements will provide important information on the movements of atmospheric water in France. (author)

Abstract (French)

L'eau tritiee, d'origine thermonucleaire, represente un nouveau et tres interessant parametre que l'hydrogeologue utilise de plus en plus dans des problemes tres divers. Les auteurs exposent les resultats de leurs travaux dans les domaines suivants: -Hydrologie karstique. A nos latitudes, les eaux de precipitation presentent un pic de concentration annuel au mois de juin. Utilisant ce 'signal', les auteurs montrent comment ont pu etre etablies des correlations entre les pertes d'un cours d'eau et une resurgence distante d'une trentaine de kilometres, apres une campagne systematique de mesure des eaux de precipitation des cours d'eau et des sources. Ces mesures ont eu des consequences importantes pour un projet d'essai faisant intervenir un traceur emetteur de rayonnement gamma. -Reseau CETA (reseau de collection d'eau tritiee atmospherique). Ce reseau a ete mis en place avec la collaboration des services de la Meteorologie nationale. Il interesse la collection et la mesure d'echantillons preleves mensuellement dans 26 stations reparties a peu pres homogenement sur le territoire francais. Son objectif est double: constituer en premier lieu une 'banque' d'echantillons, ou des resultats de mesures, devant interesser toute etude hydrologique future entreprise en France; etudier en second lieu la repartition spatiale des retombees de tritium. De tres interessants resultats, traduits par des courbes d'isoconcentration en tritium, ont pu mettre en evidence l' 'effet mer-continent', les concentrations en tritium augmentant vers l'interieur du continent. En fin d'exploitation, les auteurs esperent obtenir de ces mesures d'importantes informations sur les mouvements de l'eau atmospherique en France. (author)
