Description
Full text: Low and medium energy accelerators are widely used for advanced research in nuclear science, in medical sciences for diagnosis and treatment; trace element analysis for environment monitoring material modification and their characterization, preparation of membranes, ultra sensitive mass spectrometry, nuclear data generation of relevance to nuclear power programme. The Folded Tandem Ion Accelerator (FOTIA) at BARC is an indigenously developed 6 MV Electrostatic Accelerator capable of delivering both light and heavy ion beams for basic research and applications. It is used extensively for material modification and their characterization using analytical like RBS, NRA, ERDA, PIXE and PIGE. The proton beams are extracted in air to study effect on live cells, external PIXE for forensic and environment studies and also for detector calibration. Light radioactive isotope like 6He have also been produced using ion beams from FOTIA facility. A 50 keV Low Energy Accelerator Facility (LEAF) has also been set up. It is based on a SNICS ion can deliver intense negative ion beams of most of the elements and clusters. The beams are used to study the effect of radiation on photoluminescence of microdots, production of ion implantation, etc. In this paper we will discuss details of these R and D programs with FOTIA and LEAF facilities at BARC
