Regulatory requirements for new build in India

  • 1. Atomic Energy Regulatory Board, Mumbai (India)

Description

India is executing a three-stage Nuclear Power Programme. The first stage is uranium-based thermal nuclear power plants. PHWRs continue to be the main stay in this stage. The second stage with sodium-cooled fast reactors is launched to recycle plutonium and unused fertile uranium components obtained from the first stage reprocessed fuel. And the third stage will follow to use the thorium reserves in the country. The Indian Nuclear Power Programme has been steadily growing. Beginning with small sized 220- MWe units, it is at present moving on with 700MWe PHWR units under construction. A complete indigenous capability in executing all the elements of fuel cycle has been established. The programme continues to expand. In this process the regulatory requirements have also been evolving alongside. Assimilation of IAEA and other international regulatory principles, inclusion of technology-specific requirements and feedback from operational experiences have been used for configuring as well as updating the regulatory requirements. This presentation will describe this evolution and certain salient regulatory requirements applicable to the present projects in India.
