Nuclear track detectors in geological: experience of work in Caucasus

  • 1. Research Center of Natural Radioactivity, Kholmsky (Russian Federation)

Description

Experience of application of SSNTDs for tasks of engineering geology in the Northern Caucasus is described. SSNTDs (LR-115 (France, Kodak), the size 10 x 10 mm) have been placed in the bottom of the pipe with one open-end, which was placed in the soil in depth 50-60 cm. At these formation of moisture on the surface of SSNTDs may be the main source of mistakes. Different forms of Rn-probes with SSNTDs have been investigated. For comparison all variety of Rn-probes in a faults and landslips in the south of Russia were applied. As a result applying even only plastic glasses of 200 ml volume with fastened SSNTDs to the bottom vertically reliable geological data were received. Thus the moisture on the surface of detectors was not besieged. Activity of radon and thoron was determined after standard chemical procedure by the account of number of tracks. Also, applying the uranium and thorium samples located at open end of the Rn-probes, distributions of isotopes inside detectors have been investigated
