Vast expanses of the western part of central and southern Africa are covered with uniform, sandy formations of the Kalahari type. The topography of these areas and their present morphological characteristics are mainly the result of erosion by rain. Information on the hydrology of the surface waters in these areas is fairly limited and is insufficient to permit any conclusions regarding the way in which erosion by rain takes place. To obtain a better understanding of these phenomena, the author devised a series of experiments based on the use of 46Sc-labelled radioactive sand. These experiments began at the beginning of the 1964/65 rainy season and are continuing. The experimental plot corresponds to convex and rectilinear portions of a hillside with a slope varying between 0 and 12 degrees. The vegetation consists of grassy savannah of substeppe appearance and secondary forests. Series of labelled samples were placed successively on the surface of the experimental plot and the erosive effect of rain was determined by measuring the residual concentrations after rainfall. Some samples were placed below a shield so as to eliminate the effects of splash and reveal the part played by runoff. Radiographic films were used to study the dispersion of labelled particles in the surrounding area. This radiographic method made it possible to determine the scale of erosion by splash for different rainfall conditions. The erosion diagrams obtained from these experiments show the correlations that exist between the intensity and duration of the rainfall and the erosion of the soil. Examination of the erosion diagrams and the shielded samples and analysis of the radiographs showed that erosion by rain on Kalahari ground covered with substeppe savannah is caused mainly by splash erosion and by dispersed, intermittent runoff. Sheet wash plays no part if the slope is less than 12 degrees. (author)

Abstract (French)

De vastes etendues de la partie occidentale de l'Afrique centrale et de l'Afrique australe sont couvertes de formations homogenes et sablonneuses du type Kalahari. Les formes du relief de ces regions et la morphogenese actuelle resultent essentiellement de l'action de l'erosion pluviale. Les renseignements sur l'hydrologie des eaux de surface dans ces regions sont assez limites et ne permettent pas d'evaluer les modalites de l'erosion pluviale. Afin de mieux comprendre ces phenomenes, l'auteur a concu une serie d'experiences fondees sur l'utilisation d'un sable radioactif, marque au 46Sc. Ces experiences ont commence au debut de la saison des pluies 1964/1965 et se poursuivent actuellement. Le terrain experimental correspond a des portions convexes et rectilignes d'un versant dont la pente varie entre 0 degree et 12 degrees. La couverture vegetale est constituee par une savane herbeuse d'aspect substeppique et des forets secondaires. Des series d'echantillons marques ont ete successivement deposees en surface sur le terrain experimental. La determination des concentrations residuelles Cti, mesurees apres une pluie, permet d'evaluer l'effet erosif de cette pluie. Certains echantillons ont ete deposes au-dessous d'un auvent afin d'eliminer les effets du splash et de deceler le role du ruissellement. Des pellicules radiographiques ont ete utilisees afin d'etudier la dispersion des grains marques autour du lieu de depot. Cette methode radiographique permet de determiner l'importance de l'erosion par le splash en fonction des caracteres des precipitations. Les diagrammes des erosions issus de ces experiences etablissent les correlations qui existent entre les valeurs intensite-duree des pluies et l'erosion des sols. Les diagrammes des erosions, l'etude des depots sous auvent et l'analyse des radiographies montrent que I'erosion pluviale sur les terrains kalahariens, couverts d'une savane substeppique, resulte essentiellement de l'erosion par le splash et du ruissellement diffus et discontinu. Le ruissellement en nappe (sheet wash) n'agit pas sur les versants dont la pente est inferieure a 12 degrees. (author)
