Description
Identifying potential exposures is crucial in preparing a safety assessment document, as Government Regulation Number 33 of 2007 mandated. This regulation is implemented in BAPETEN Regulation Number 4 of 2020, which requires identifying potential exposure incidents of unnecessary radiation exposure. Focus of this paper is limited to identifying potential exposures that occur in the use of ionizing radiation in diagnostic and interventional radiology and interventional radiology and this paper aims to identify the causes of potential exposure in using X-ray machines in diagnostic and interventional radiology facilities. Through a survey of 115 facilities in 6 regions of Indonesia, 14 stages were identified that could give rise to radiation and potential exposure. The normal operation stage of the X-ray machine was the most common stage for potential exposure, with five potential events identified. These included repeating irradiation, unclear referral letters, suboptimal image quality, mismatch of the irradiation field with the examination object, and incorrect use of irradiation factors or techniques. The results of this identification can be used to assess the risk of potential exposure and determine the need for radiation protection in diagnostic and interventional radiology facilities. (author)
