An overview of radioactive waste management at Ontario Power Generation
Description
The presentation will provide an overview of Ontario Power Generation's radioactive waste management operations. OPG's Nuclear Waste Management Division has accountability for the operation of three radioactive waste facilities located at the Bruce, Pickering and Darlington sites. The Division manages the safe transportation, processing and storage of low, intermediate and high level waste. OPG uses its own radioactive materials transportation fleet and has been safely transporting waste for over forty years. Low-level waste is managed in a central location and is volume reduced where possible through an incinerator and a compactor. Intermediate Level Waste such as resins and filters is stored in engineered in ground containers. Used Fuel is transferred from the nuclear generating station fuel bays and stored in Dry Storage Containers. OPG has safely processed and stored over 2,000 of these used fuel Dry Storage Containers. OPG endeavours to minimize its environmental footprint through waste sorting, segregation and minimization. OPG waste management program encompasses three pillars: stewardship, lasting solutions and peace of mind. The presentation will also provide an overview of the proposed project for a Deep Geologic Repository for Low and Intermediate Level Waste and its current status.
