Nuclear waste repositories
Description
An unsolved problem? Where will it take us in the future? Which concepts and solutions are worth striving for? Since the catastrophic reactor accident in Fukushima, there has been a political rethink in the field of energy provision. But even if tomorrow all nuclear power plants would shut down, the unresolved issue of nuclear waste disposal would remain. Worldwide, the question of the correct treatment of radioactive waste arises. The world's 440 power reactors alone leave behind around 7,000 tonnes of high-level spent fuel each year to produce around 2% of world energy demand. The search for a suitable location deals with technology and politics. Even in Austria, a country without nuclear power plants, has produced 11,000 barrels - mostly slightly radioactive waste - from medicine and industry. There have been many ideas since the beginning of nuclear energy use. Transmutation, disposal in space, burial for a million years in the Antarctic or elsewhere, the complete use as a new fuel. Substantially new considerations have not existed for decades, and certainly not usefully implemented concepts. How can society deal with this situation?
