Epidemiological studies on the health state of the inhabitants of the mining region and the miners in Saxony and Thuringia

On current occasion the Commission on Radiological Protection emphasizes with concern that the performability of the whole research project is at present uncertain, because the access on the 'National Cancer Register' and the 'Central Residents' Register' of the former GDR is not secured in the future. Furthermore, SSK is concerned that the security of the 'Aue Personnel Archives' on the Wismut project as well as the 'Archives on Silicosis Diseases' available in Schlema is not guaranteed. Over and above that, the expert knowledge available in the archives of the Wismut project should be preserved. The same applies to the reconstruction of uranium ore miners' exposure data. It is strongly recommended to start the initial works for the main phase of the epidemiological study as soon as possible in order to secure the data in cooperation with the professional associations. Abstract (German)
Aus aktuellem Anlass weist die Strahlenschutzkommission mit Sorge darauf hin, dass die Durchfuehrbarkeit des gesamten Forschungsprojektes zur Zeit in Frage gestellt ist, weil der Zugriff auf das 'Nationale Krebsregister' und das 'Zentrale Einwohnerregister' der frueheren DDR in Zukunft nicht gesichert ist. Sie ist ferner besorgt, dass die Sicherheit des in Schlema vorhandenen 'Personalarchivs Aue' der Firma Wismut sowie des 'Archivs ueber Silikoseerkrankungen' nicht gewaehrleistet ist. Darueberhinaus sollte der in den Archiven der Fa. Wismut vorhandene Sachverstand erhalten bleiben. Das gleiche gilt fuer die Rekonstruktion von Expositionsdaten der Uranbergleute. Ein baldiger Beginn der Anfangsarbeiten zur Hauptphase der epidemiologischen Studie ist zwecks Datensicherung in Zusammenarbeit mit den Berufsgenossenschaften dringend anzuraten.
