The Pugwash Conference on Science and world affairs was devoted to ethical problems related to science and technology developments in the frame of nuclear disarmament, achievement of nuclear-weapon-free world, environmental impacts of nuclear power application, sustainable sources development. When it comes to major scientific discoveries, their application is most often decided upon by industry, and sometimes by politics. How can scientists influence the path from discovery to its application, if the general desire is that science should serve the interests of mankind? Special responsibilities of scientists are emphasised in trying achieve the extermination of nuclear or other weapon of mass destruction, although with the end of the cold war this threat was diminished
