Description

The 23rd CEG Plenary Meeting was held on 7-8 October 2009 in Rome, Italy. Eighty-four participants from 12 countries: Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Japan, Italy, Norway, Netherlands, Russia, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the USA, and two international organisations: IAEA and EBRD attended the meeting. In 2009, Japan joined the CEG as full participating member. The Meeting addressed the progress in nuclear legacy projects in Russia. The pace of cooperation had been increased over the past year with a number of notable achievements. These included: the first ever removal of spent nuclear fuel assemblies from Gremikha, a former Navy base; the ocean transport in the Pacific of two fuelled nuclear submarines simultaneously as dry deck cargo by a heavy lift ship; upgrade of the Far-East Railway to secure safe transportation of SNF from the Zvezda shipyard; beginning of construction of a site for isolation of two damaged nuclear submarines in the Far-East; completion of removal of RTGs from the Murmansk and Arkhangelsk regions and the Pacific coast of Russia.
